“Reality, Fantasy, And The Web”

Iconic street and graffiti artist Mode 2 is having an exhibition of current works in Newcastle, U.K., until October 10th.  The show features about 100 drawings and paintings created on cardboard and arranged into a mosaic by the artist himself. The photograph is entitled ‘Lightness of Being’. It’s a beautifully lit composition, and it highlights a fit, sculptural form.  And I’m all about capable women’s bodies.

A host of art photographs are up for bid at Sotheby’s in New York on October 9th.  The selection includes pieces by Cindy Sherman, Man Ray, Richard Avedon, Irving Penn and Robert Mapplethorpe.  Six full frontal nudes of Kate Moss by Chuck Close from 2003 are estimated at $100,000 - $150,000.  Twelve semi-nude images of Marilyn Monroe, shot by Laurence Schiller are estimated at $50,000 - $70,000-.

Taschen published a book compiled by Uwe Ommer of women (inexperienced in photography), shooting themselves in states of undress and often self-pleasuring. The book was inspired by Ommer one day catching his babysitter in the mirror, taking pictures of herself with his Polaroid camera. 

Some of the models set everything up themselves, while others were assisted by Ommer with lighting and angles.  Do It Yourself is a selection of candid and beautiful images, with a voyeuristic edge.
